What are set screws used for? A set screw is a type of screw generally used to secure an object within or against another object, normally not using a nut. Widely used in all types of industries ranging from simple tasks such as installing a door knob, to more complex ones like working on a space shuttle. The most common examples are securing a pulley or gear to a shaft. You may like What are set screws
- Flat Point Set Screws
Flat set screws have a drive end for the installation tool, and a flattened end to create tension with the mating surface. These set screws are frequently used with a detente to increase holding power. They are ideal for applications where a non-marring connection is desired. Flat set screws allow for easy adjustment of the screw location, which is ideal for applications where frequent resetting and relocation of connected components is necessary. Once moved, there is little sign of the previous point of contact with the set screw.
- Cone Point Set Screws
Cone set screws are intended for more permanent installations. They have a hardened point on the mating end, which penetrates the surface of the shaft upon tightening. This provides greater tension against the shaft, allowing for higher loads without slipping. Since the cone set screws penetrate the surface of the shaft, there is no need for milling a detente in the shaft. This can reduce milling costs, and prevent balancing issues in high tolerance fabrications.
- Dog Point Set Screw
A dog set screw is used with a detente or with a hole drilled in the surface of the shaft. These set screws have a protruding tip that rests against the detente, or fits into a pre-drilled hole in the shaft. They are intended for permanent installations, and provide superior torsional and axial holding. Once installed correctly, dog set screws will not slip unless overloaded to the point of shearing.
- Cup Point Set Screws
A cup point screw is the most comonly used set screw featuring a cup-shaped indentation on one end. Thie cup point of this screw is mainly used for a quick, semi-permanent or permanent part assembly where the cutting in of the cup point edge of the screw is acceptable
- Oval Point Set Screws
An oval point set screw features an oval shaped point on one end. This set screw is used in an environment where frequent adjustments are needed and minimal deforming of the part is required.
- Knurled Cup Point Set Screws
Knurl point screws are generally used to secure one object within another. The serrated ridge on the knurl cup set screw helps reduce loosening due to vibration. The knurled point combines digging action of the cup point with counter-clockwise locking knurls that have a ratchet-locking action which helps resist loosening, even under the most severe vibrations.
Along with the different types of points, set screws have numerous drive styles. These include:
- Straight slot: a single slot in the fastener head and drive by a flat-bladed screwdriver. It was the first type of screw drive to be developed. This is common in woodworking applications, but not where a power tool would be used because it tends to slip out of the head and possibly damage the surrounding material.
- Hex socket: a hexagonal recess screw drive and may be driven by an Allen Wrench.
- Square socket: a square-shaped socket in the screw head and a square protrusion on the tool. There are two main advantages because of its design: it makes inserting the tool easier and tends to help keep the screw on the tool tip without the user needing to hold it there.
